Top 5 Vegetarian Options

Vegetarian restaurants, let alone vegetarian options are not so easy to come by here in Cartagena. The word “vegetariano” isn’t easily grasped by a majority of Colombians, especially from the coast, so we have done the work for you and put together this list of the best places to fill all your vegetarian needs.

Girasoles Vegetarian Restaurant
Girasoles is Cartagena’s only fully vegetarian restaurant and has become quite popular during the lunch hour rush. This place follows the theme of most typical Colombian lunch spots where they offer a set plate at a set price. You pay 8.000 pesos for a soup and a plate which typically includes rice and some sort of bean or legume along with its protein-packed main attraction. They also sell a variety of health food products including organic foods, fresh baked breads and desserts and a variety of spices and seasonings.

Gokela- Soups, Salads and Sandwiches
Gokela brands itself as a healthy fast-food option. They opened up about 5 years ago and are continuously growing. Their original location is in Boca Grande, and can now be found at the Boca Grande Plaza located in the food court or at their newest location in the Old Town. They serve a variety of healthy options including soups, salads and sandwiches and their newest location downtown offers gluten-free pizzas as well. This place is great as they have both menu items and create your own options for sandwiches and salads.

Souk- Falafel Shawarma
Souk is a fast food chain restaurant found in both Caribe Plaza and Mall Plaza shopping centre and serves up the best Falafels ever. A Colombian girl once described it as the subway of Shawarma. You are able to choose your own toppings from a very wide selection including Lebanese salad, caramelized onions, pickles, olives, fried eggplant, spiced shredded carrots, hummus, babaganoush…the list goes on. Whether you want to hit the mall for the latest Colombian designer digs or not, this place NEEDS to be on your list of places to eat. Trust.

Crepes and Waffles
Crepes and Waffles is one of Colombia’s most popular chain restaurants and rightfully so. Their menu includes a vast assortment of crepes fuzed with culinary delicacies from all around the world. Their menu of course includes both savoury and sweet crepes and waffles, pitas, soups and amazing salads. For around 10.000 pesos, diners can fill up their own salad bowl with a gardens array of toppings from their spectacular salad bar. There is also an extensive vegetarian section offering a wide variety of crepes, pitas and plated salads.

Street Food Options
Cartagena is a city that lives on the streets, where you can find almost anything on the streets including an array of delicious foods. Only problem is, street food isn’t exactly vegetarian friendly. But don’t worry, we have scanned the city for the best street food options for you. We highly recommend ‘deditos de queso’ (cheese fingers) which is cheese wrapped in a slightly sweet pastry and deep fried. Also be sure to try the ‘caraminoles de queso’ which is yuca stuffed with cheese and deep fried. Another finger-licking option to try is an ‘empanada de queso’. We didn’t say they were healthy options but everything else on our list is so you deserve a special street food treat.
