01 Jun El Kilo
El Kilo is fairly new to the culinary world of Cartagena but is already one of Cartagena’s most talked about eateries. Known for their seafood, El Kilo serves the utmost freshest fish offering everything from raw to grilled preparations while showcasing the Caribbean sea’s finest ingredients with sauces so pungent, you will be dreaming about for days.
While it may look like just a hole in the wall (a very cute hole in the wall, might we add) from its exteriors; the interior decor will take you straight to NYC’s hipster dinning scene, with industrial metal, distressed wood and a very stylish staff. The cocktail menu includes genuine drink recipes and infused liqueurs that might have you thinking you haven’t even left the big city, but once you skim-over the food menu you will see it’s just exuding with Colombian soul and Caribbean flavours.
Don’t be tricked into thinking; its just another hipster hangout with a cool vibe and mediocre food by their trendy aesthetics. Or that it’s just ANOTHER seafood spot in Cartagena by the array of fresh fish being chilled on ice in their window display. Take the time to enter this fine venue and try their highly talked about seafood creations for yourself.
The menu and plates certainly stand up to their name as options are broad and portions are far from small. Some dishes are even priced by weight, so make sure your eyes aren’t bigger than your stomach this time around. That being said, if you are feeling less than hungry, you can opt for a tantalizing appetizer, which could easily pass as a main course.
In sheer Caribbean fashion, ceviche is El Kilo’s claim to fame, and rightfully so. Here you have the option to create your own ceviche. Choose your fish, then your sauce-and we’re not just talking your traditional lime juice marinade here. The sauce options will have you so curious you’ll want to come back everyday to try each of these unique, zesty fish-bath combos.
We can almost promise you will leave this place feeling at least one kilo heavier but it will be well worth it and at least you know you will just sweat it all off on your walk back to the hotel.
