17 Jun San Felipe Fortress – Cartagena
For one of the best vantage points in the old city, head to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. This massive and impressive fortification is not for the light of heart – the fort itself is huge with enormous, steeply inclined walls, many meters thick. The climb to the top can be quite strenuous.
That aside, this attraction is a must-see. Originally constructed as a central point for the collection of metal to build and supply the Armada, the castle eventually became the primary point of defense for the city which sprang up all around it.
Perhaps more impressive than the cannons, ramparts and view from above are the miles of tunnels below the structure, complete with so-called killing rooms.
We highly recommend hiring a guide for this one and expect to spend half a day here at least. Contact our city concierge now to book a guide before heading to the fortress.
