Birding

Birding Cartagena

Of all the things that Colombia may be famous (or infamous) for, its diversity in bird species is often overlooked, when in fact Colombia is well-known in the birding world as one of the “birdiest” countries on the planet, home to more than 1920 species of birds. That puts Colombia at the top of the list, with around 20% of the world’s species. Together with the geographical, gastronomical and cultural richness that the country boasts, Colombia should definitely be at the top of the bucket list for bird-watching fanatics.

And birdwatchers in Cartagena de Indias, on the Caribbean coast, won’t miss out either. Just 40-minutes drive from the walled city is a lush green paradise, where you will have the unique opportunity to see rare species of birds, some of which can only be found in this particular region of Colombia. You will be picked up from your hotel at a time that suits you best (remember, the early bird catches the worm, as they say!), and taken to the outskirts of Cartagena where you will meet some of the best experts in their field in a stunning natural setting, where famous biologist Alexander von Humboldt stayed in the 19th Century, to make observations about “Nueva Granada”.

All 15 hectares of exquisitely-preserved, private land will be yours to explore alongside a professional bilingual ornithologist who is eager to provide you with all the information and conditions you need to spot some incredible species. In an average morning birding in Turbaco, you could spot up to 80 of the 200 different species to be found in the area. You can check out here on eBird the different species that have been recently spotted. All plans purchased with us at Hi Cartagena also include breakfast and refreshments, WiFi, and access to the pool in the house – perfect for refreshing pit-stops between birdwatching sessions. In just a couple of hours, you could tick some rare and beautiful species off your list, such as the Red-throated Ant-Tanager, the Blue-Winged Parrotlet, and the Lance-Tailed Manakin, to name a few. And you’re in for a treat as its not only birds you will be able to see during your visit – you may just get a glimpse of the resident howler monkies, sloths, anteaters, or even ocelots. It’s incredible to think that all of this is in the wild so close to Cartagena! This surely is ecotourism at its finest!
